Propane Gas Safety Tips

Propane is a safe, reliable, and energy‑efficient fuel used for heating, cooking, and more. While propane systems are designed with safety in mind, knowing a few basic precautions can help protect your home, family, and community.

Know the Signs of a Gas Leak

Propane has a strong odor (similar to rotten eggs) added to help detect leaks. Warning signs may include:

  • Look for: Persistent bubbling in dirt or standing water, dirt blowing into the air, frost ball in an open field, dead/dying or discolored vegetation, sinkholes or exposed pipes
  • Smell for: Strong, unusual odor resembling rotten eggs, sulfur, a skunk, or a dead animal
  • Listen for: Hissing, roaring, or whistling
  • Unusual usage: If you are using more gas than you expect, there may be a leak

You may not always smell a leak. Installing a propane gas detector adds an extra layer of protection.

What to Do If You Smell Gas

If you suspect a propane leak:

  • Leave the area immediately and move upwind, taking pets with you
  • Do not smoke, create sparks, or operatae electrical devices
  • Avoid phones, lights, vehicles, or open flames
  • Call, from a safe distance, Jackson Energy Authority at 731‑422‑7500 or 911
  • Do not try to find or fix the problem yourself

Dig Safely Around Gas Lines

Before starting any digging or excavation project, large or small, please follow the below steps:

  • Call 811 at least three business days before digging
  • Wait for utilities to be marked and respect all color‑coded markings
  • Dig carefully within 24 inches of marked lines
  • Call 731‑422‑7500 immediately if a gas line is exposed or damaged

Carbon Monoxide Safety

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas caused by improper combustion. Review ways to protect your household from carbon monoxide problems here.

Practice Everyday Propane Safety

Below are some tips to help you practice propane safety:

  • Clear appliances and vents of debris
  • Store flammable materials away from gas equipment
  • Color check: Proper appliance flames should burn blue, not yellow or orange
  • Schedule regular safety inspections by qualified professionals
