Hazardous Materials

Improper disposal of household hazardous materials carries potential risks to individuals, the community and the environment. Pouring them down the drain, into storm drains, on the ground or in the trash can lead to contamination of drinking water, wastewater, rivers, streams and lakes. Here are a few quick tips to practice for safe handling of hazardous wastes:

• When using household chemicals or hazardous products, make sure to read labels and follow all directions for proper care.
• Properly maintain your septic system.
• Never store hazardous materials in food containers.
• Do not pour used chemicals or hazardous products down the sink, in the toilet, out onto the ground, in a ditch, in sewers or storm drains.
• Do not remove chemicals or hazardous products from their original container to ensure they are correctly identified for proper disposal.
• Use commercial car washes designed to prevent pollutant runoff from entering storm sewers.
• Never mix unused or unwanted hazardous materials as this could cause a chemical reaction, an ignition or explosion. Once mixed they become contaminated and might not be recyclable.
• Empty containers of hazardous waste can also pose hazards due to the residual chemicals remaining in the container. Handle with care.

Properly dispose of any unwanted, outdated or unused chemicals or hazardous products stored in the basement, utility shed, garage or barn.
