Celebrating Public Power and Natural Gas

JEA Celebrates National Public Power Week and Public Natural Gas Week

Your Community. Your Utility. Your Energy.

This week, JEA is proud to join community-owned utilities across the nation in celebrating National Public Power Week and Public Natural Gas Week, recognized October 4-10, 2026. These annual observances highlight the value of locally owned utilities and the dedicated employees who work every day to provide safe, reliable, and affordable services to the communities they call home. As Jackson's community-owned utility, JEA has a unique mission. We are not owned by distant shareholders or private investors. Instead, we exist to serve the people and businesses of our community. Every decision we make is focused on delivering value, reliability, and exceptional service to the customers who depend on us.

The Power of Public Power

Public Power Week, organized by the Public Power Week campaign through the American Public Power Association, celebrates the more than 2,000 community-owned electric utilities that serve communities across the United States. The week is designed to help customers better understand the benefits of public power and how community-owned utilities contribute to stronger local communities. [publicpower.org], [publicpower.org]

Public power utilities are built around a simple idea: local control. Because public power utilities are owned by the communities they serve, they are directly accountable to local customers rather than shareholders. This model allows utilities like JEA to prioritize reliability, customer service, infrastructure investments, and long-term community needs. [publicpower.org], [impa.com]

From maintaining electric infrastructure and restoring power during storms to supporting economic development and community initiatives, JEA's electric employees work around the clock to keep our community powered and connected.

Recognizing the Value of Public Natural Gas

At the same time, JEA is proud to celebrate Public Natural Gas Week, a nationwide observance led by the American Public Gas Association. The week recognizes the critical role that locally owned natural gas systems play in providing dependable, affordable energy to homes, businesses, and industries. [apga.org], [apga.org]

Like public power, public natural gas systems are community-focused and locally governed. They provide customers with a reliable energy source while ensuring decisions are made with local priorities in mind. Public Natural Gas Week also serves as an opportunity to educate customers about energy efficiency, safety, and the many benefits that natural gas provides. [apga.org]

JEA's natural gas team works throughout the year to maintain pipelines, respond to service needs, support economic growth, and help ensure safe and reliable natural gas service for our community.

Serving Jackson Since Day One

Whether it's delivering electricity, natural gas, water, wastewater services, or broadband through EPlus Broadband, JEA's mission remains the same: providing essential services that enhance quality of life and support the continued growth of our community.

The strength of a community-owned utility is found in its people. During National Public Power Week and Public Natural Gas Week, we're especially grateful for the lineworkers, gas technicians, operators, engineers, customer service representatives, field crews, and support staff who make our mission possible every day.

Their dedication helps ensure that homes stay comfortable, businesses stay productive, and our community continues to thrive.

Thank You, Jackson

As we celebrate these national observances, we also celebrate the customers we are privileged to serve.

Thank you for allowing JEA to be your community-owned utility. Together, we're building a stronger, safer, and more connected future for Jackson and West Tennessee.

Happy National Public Power Week and Public Natural Gas Week from all of us at JEA!
