A Step in the Right Direction

Natural gas is an abundant domestic resource with great potential to displace vast quantities of imported oil. The long-term stability and low prices for natural gas relative to oil are likely to remian for many years - based on well-documented economic models. The long-term nature of fleet asset management suggests that it is prudent to continue to invest in transitioning more vehicles to natural gas. Advancements in technology are leading to more availability of vehicles as well as fueling stations and home fueling units.

In an effort to serve as good stewards to our community, Jackson Energy Authority continually educates customers and the public about compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel source. We currently have CNG fleet vehicles as well private refueling stations equipped with slow-fill and fast fill units. Because of an alternative fuel partnership between JEA, the City of Jackson and Waste Management, these private stations not only refuel JEA fleet vehicles but also City of Jackson and Waste Management fleet vehicles. Although this represents a small step toward improvement of the quality of life in our community, it may usher in a new era of environmental and economic growth delivered through the use of natural gas.
