Natural Gas As An Alternative Fuel Source

Natural gas is one of the cleanest burning fossil fuels available today. It is a domestic, versatile fuel source that can be used in residential, commercial, agricultural, industrial and vehicle applications. We use it in our everyday lives to heat our homes and businesses, heat our water, cook our food, dry our clothes and even dry grain on the farm. More importantly, natural gas is being used as a transportation fuel for light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles. These natural gas vehicles are helping improve our environment while reducing our nation’s dependence on foreign oil.

The Benefits

Economic/Political

  • Fuel cost savings = 30 - 50%
  • NGV’s require less maintenance due to reduced carbon deposits in the engine.
  • Can be used as a hedge against gasoline and diesel prices.
  • 120 year supply at current consumption rates
  • Approximately 60% of the oil we use comes from foreign countries.
  • Approximately $1 billion a day leaves this country due to oil imports.
  • CNG is a domestic fuel and creates American jobs. 98% of the natural gas we use
    comes from North America.

Environmental/Health

  • 25% less CO2
  • 80% less nitrogen oxide
  • 90% less particulates
  • Quieter engines – 90% more than diesel
  • Cleaner than electric vehicles.
  • 20-30% less greenhouse gas emissions than diesel or gasoline fueled vehicles

Safety

  • 5-15% flammability window
  • Lighter than air, won’t pool on the ground or contaminate lakes, rivers or groundwater in
    the event of a spill.
  • Higher ignition temperature
