Check your water heater use

After heating and cooling your home, your water heater is your home's next biggest energy user. When you install or replace a water heater, make sure you are getting the right-sized unit for your family's use.

  • If the outside of your unit is warm to the touch, insulate the exterior and save as much as 20 percent of your water-heating costs. Insulation kits are found in local hardware stores. Follow installation directions carefully.
  • Keep the setting between 110 and 120 degrees.
  • Insulate pipes leading to and from your water heater if they are warm to the touch.
  • Check for leaks in your hot water lines. These leaks cost you in two ways: the water and the energy used to heat it.
