Check Your Utility Room and Basement

Utility Room

  • Wash and/or rinse clothes in cold water. Changing the rinse water to cold, for example, can save about 17 gallons of hot water a load.
  • Wash and dry only full loads of clothes.
  • Clean the lint filter after each use.
  • Vent dryer to the outside, not into a crawl space.

Basement

  • Check around windows and ductwork for air leaks. Caulk and insulate where necessary.
  • Seal crawl spaces from cold, outside air. Foundation vents should then be opened in the warmer months.
