How to Read Your Utility Bill

Paying your bill

Jackson Energy Authority's bill is designed to give you a lot of information about your current and past utility usage.

1. This is the amount you owe for your Jackson Energy Authority services for the most recent billing period, plus any past-due amounts.

2. This is your account number.

3. Your payment is due at Jackson Energy Authority on this date.

4. This is what you will owe, plus a late charge, if you pay after the due date.

5. Check this box if you have written something on the back of your bill.

6. Your bill is based on utilities used at this address.

7. Your current bill is based on utilities used between these two due dates.

8. The body of the bill explains your current use of utility services, including the number of days covered by your current utility bill and your meter readings at the beginning and end of that usage cycle. If you use all of Jackson Energy Authority's services, plus have several fixed charges, your bill could be two pages long.

9. Rate type is used by Jackson Energy Authority in determining how a customer should be billed, such as at residential or commercial rates.

10. These numbers identify your electric, gas, water and some wastewater meters.

11. The multiplier is used to determine the correct meter usage. Most residential customers will have a multiplier of one.

12. Jackson Energy Authority does not provide garbage service, but as a convenience to City of Jackson residents, we include the garbage fee on the utility bill.

13. This row below your utility usage and other charges shows the activity in your account since your last bill. One of three things will have happened: You made a payment on your bill; you made a late payment and we added a late charge; or we made an adjustment to your bill.

14. Over time, your account information helps you keep track of your utility use. If you have been at your current address long enough, you can compare your current use with the amount you used a month ago and a year ago.

15. This shows your average daily utility cost is for metered services before taxes for the usage period reflected on this bill.
