Understanding Wastewater Services An efficient wastewater treatment process plays an important role in today's civilized society, protecting our health and preserving our environment. At Jackson Energy Authority, we work hard to meet -- and exceed -- the high standards set for wastewater treatment by the state and federal government that protect our environment.
Wastewater costs are driven by three main factors: 1. The investment to install pipe and treatment facilities. Wastewater pipe is more expensive to install than other utilities because it is bigger and must be laid deeper in the ground so it can flow by gravity to the treatment plant. 2. More stringent stat and federal standards as we learn how to better protect our environment. 3. The higher costs to treat and transport wastewater. In Jackson, for example, it costs more to treat wastewater than drinking water because little needs to be done to the drinking water that comes from the underground aquifer. In fact, it costs JEA 53 cents to treat 1,000 gallons of wastewater; 24 cents for 1,000 gallons of water. Jackson Energy Authority works hard to keep wastewater rates as low as possible. Wastewater use on your utility bill is determined by the amount of drinking water. Wastewater Treatment
