Propane Safety
Jackson Energy Authority reminds you to play it
safe with your propane use.
An unpleasant odor put in the propane gas helps
you detect potentially dangerous leaks from faulty appliances, broken
pipes or your tank.
If you smell or suspect a gas leak:
- Put out all smoking materials.
- Do not use electrical switches or appliances
or the telephone.
- Do not try to re-light any pilot lights.
- Get everyone out of your home. Call JEA or
your plumber from a neighbor's home.
Other safety tips:
- In an emergency situation, such as a punctured
propane line or even an earthquake, you can turn off the propane coming
in to your home. Lift up the dome on the top of your propane tank and
turn the gas valve clockwise.
- Do not keep trying if you are having trouble
lighting a pilot light. Call Jackson Energy Authority or your plumber.
Metered customers pay no labor charge for JEA services.
- Use only propane appliances that have a seal
from a recognized independent testing laboratory.
- Whenever you need to dig near your propane
tank or underground line, call Tennessee One-Call at 1-800-351-1111,
so that all underground utility lines can first be located.
