Low Cost Electric Service

Jackson Energy Authority electric customers enjoy one of the lowest rates in the country. JEA's rates are low because we work hard at keeping our operating and maintenance expenses down.

We buy our electricity from the Tennessee Valley Authority, which has a history of providing lower-cost electric power. The purchase of electricity, in fact, is a large amount of the Energy Authority's electric cost. About 81 cents of every dollar paid by our customers for electricity is used to purchase energy from TVA.

Besides low residential rates, JEA also offers a variety of commercial/industrial rate structures and incentives for industry and other large electric users.

Jackson Energy Authority's electric transmission and distribution system serves more than 30,000 customers. Our power arrives from TVA at four 161,000-volt delivery points. The existing system capacity has ample supply for future customer growth. Transformers in Jackson Energy Authority substations located throughout our community step the 161,000 volts down to 46,000 volts and then to the 12,000 volts that are stepped down to the voltage delivered to your home.

The system's most recent peak load was more than 360,000 kilowatts.

24-hour-a-day monitoring
Jackson Energy Authority monitors the electric system 24 hours a day to bring you reliable electric service. Typical causes of power interruption are tree limbs falling on power lines because of bad weather and motor accidents that affect utility lines and poles. A snake, squirrel or other animal in our equipment also can cause power failure.

To decrease the possibility of limbs falling on power lines, JEA has a contractor working full-time to trim tree limbs away from lines. When planting trees, allow enough distance so the limbs will not grow into the electric lines.

Our state-of-the art computer technology alerts us when problems occur on the system. We also monitor approaching bad weather to know when to put extra electric crews on alert or to call them in when trouble occurs.
