Jackson Energy Authority’s Co-Op engineering Program offers students an opportunity to learn in the areas of electric, gas and water/wastewater engineering.

The Electrical Co-Op:

  • Works with the System Engineer to layout and design 12kV, 46kV and 161kV lines and substations.
  • Prepares new and maintains existing construction standard drawings.
  • Works with Project Coordinators on commercial projects, meeting with customers to determine their needs and designing facilities to meet their needs.
  • Works with Maps and Records personnel to update the Geographical Information System.
  • Helps prepare and update computer system models.
  • Helps prepare planning studies, including Long Range Plans and Construction Work Plans.
  • Helps design plant additions, including surveying as required, and help prepare layouts, construction drawings and contract documents.
  • Prepares and maintains various departmental files, records, drawings, plans, plat sheets, etc.
  • Helps formulate computer systems and programs used for departmental filing, record keeping and design work.
  • Works with and maintains a System Model using the Microsoft Utility Solutions Windmill modeling program used for system operation and planning.

The Gas Co-Op:

  • Works with the System Engineer to layout and design gas system facilities, including subdivisions, and regulator installations.
  • Does field survey and design of gas distribution lines for installation by JEA crews or contractors.
  • Works with Maps and Records personnel to update the Geographical Information System.
  • Works with the System Engineer to prepare and update system models used to forecast and plan for future growth and expansions using the Advantica SynerGEE Gas modeling software.
  • Aids in the performance of feasibility studies for new main extensions.
  • Works with Project Coordinators on commercial projects, meeting with customers to determine their needs and designing facilities to meet their needs.

The Water/ Wastewater Co-Op:

  • Works with the System Engineer to layout and design water and wastewater systems facility installation, including replacement of existing mains and services.
  • Uses surveying equipment and transfers field notes to drawings with CAD.
  • Designs water main and sewer line relocation plans used by construction crews in the field.
  • Aids in the performance of feasibility studies for new main extensions.
  • Performs hydraulic calculations for proposed water and wastewater lines.
  • Creates detailed cost estimates for main extensions.
  • Assembles contract documents including specifications and drawings for contractors to place bids.
  • Works with and maintains a Water System Model using the Bentley Systems WaterCAD modeling program used for system operation and planning.
  • Works with and maintains a Wastewater System Model using the MWHSoft InfoSewer modeling program used for system operation and planning.
  • Works with water and wastewater treatment plant operations to assist in evaluating efficient operations and in making required plant modifications to meet regulatory requirements.
