State-of-the-Art Technology Whether it be our utility monitoring or our billing systems, Jackson Energy Authority is a leader in the use of technology in the utility industry. Our nerve center is our underground control center, where highly trained employees work 24 hours a day monitoring our utility operations, including about 25 electric substations and hundreds of miles of feeder lines, two water treatment plants, two wastewater treatment plants, and our natural gas system. Our SCADA monitoring system alerts us immediately if, for example, we have a change in our gas system pressure or if a breaker operates on our electric system. Our SCADA system helps us respond quickly in an emergency. The whole system is designed to increase reliability of service and to decrease the amount of time from a disruption of service. Weather monitoring computers in the Dispatch center also keep us informed of approaching bad weather so we can put crews on alert. Elsewhere within JEA, meter readers use handheld computers to record customer utility usage. Billing software enables us to tell customers not only how much electricity or water they've used, for example, but it also compares that month's usage to the previous month's and that of a year ago. Our offices are equipped with the latest software programs and technology. The Jackson Energy Authority also has invested in a state-of-the-art Geographic Information System that integrates customer information with each of our utilities. We transport our data within JEA's via fiber optic cable. Using the best technology available is important
at Jackson Energy Authority. It is a vital tool in providing our customers
with reliable, cost-effective utility service.
